Fanlistings
Fanlistings are meant to be places where all the fans of a certain person, thing, movie, song, tv show, etc. can unite and show their love for the subject in question. The original fanlistings network was the brainchild of Janine, who wanted to find out how many fans there were scattered around the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the official best show ever). If you visit TFL.org now, you'll see that there are over 40,000 listings, so Janine's idea obviously caught on with the obsessive, web-savvy public. :)
This fanlisting is for one of the greatest and most well-known fictional characters ever: Peter Parker, also known as Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man. To read more about him, go here. If you've never joined a fanlisting before, you might be wondering what you're getting yourself into. Well, not to worry -- you're really just adding your name to a list of people who are fans of something, in this case, Spider-Man. You will not be signing up for a mailing list or anything like that. You'll get one email when I add you to the list, and you might get a note from me if the site ever moves, but other than that I guarantee that I won't be bugging you with constant emails or anything. Your email address does not have to be displayed on this site, so you don't need to worry about spammers getting ahold of it. Basically, if you don't have a website, then joining a fanlisting asks absolutely nothing of you aside from filling out one form. If you have a website, you can put up link buttons showing off all the things you're a fan of (like I've done here) but you don't have to do that if you don't want to. So all you're doing by joining this fanlisting is telling the world that you love Spidey, and helping tell anyone who happens to see this site just how many people feel the same way. And that's pretty much all you need to know.
Layout & Credits
This site runs on scripts from Codegrrl (with hacking by me) and Brilliant But Lazy as well as a snippet suggested by Julie and a fix by Jem. It is hosted on Dreamhost, which is an excellent company and I highly recommend them.
The site is skinned; the skin you are looking at is called Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It features a drawing of Spidey by the great artist Mike Wieringo, from an ad for the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man book. I used textures by Emma-Jane on the image, and the fonts are Radagund and Halter.
Title
The site's title, With Great Power, comes of course from the famous quotation which serves as Spidey's unofficial motto: "With great power comes great responsibility." I'm not sure any other name, really, could have been given to this fanlisting since those are the words that come closest to summarizing what Spider-Man stands for.
Site History
The fanlisting was originally approved by TFL in February 2003, and was first owned by Cassie. I am not sure when, but she at some point adopted it to Anna, who gave it to Hoppy, who officially took over the site on January 24, 2004. Then in April 2005, Hoppy was kind enough to ask me to co-own with her. We bought spiderhyphenman.com and moved the site into its new home on June 30, 2005 (which, coincidentally, was the one year anniversary of the release of Spider-Man 2). Then on December 17, 2005, Hoppy decided to give me full custody of the site, so to speak, and that's where we stand now. :D
Okay, that wasn't all that brief, but anyway. I just want to say thank you SO MUCH to my good friend Hoppy for first asking me to co-run this site with her and then eventually handing it over to me entirely. Peter/Spidey is one of my absolute favourite fictional characters, possibly my very favourite, and I was so thrilled the day I got her message asking me to co-own. :D I'm a hopelessly obsessed Spider-Geek who reads almost every Spidey title Marvel puts out and tends to watch at least one of the movies at least once a month. I promise to do my best to make this a site worthy of its subject, even if it takes me forever!
